Job Estimating

How to estimate an EV charger installation.

Use this draft-ready checklist to organize EV charger scope details before creating a customer-facing proposal.

Start with the installation scope

EV charger estimates depend on the charger type, location, electrical capacity, wiring path, mounting conditions, permit requirements, and customer expectations. Before pricing the job, confirm whether the customer needs a hardwired charger, a receptacle installation, equipment supplied by the contractor, or customer-supplied equipment.

Scope details to confirm

  • Charger location, mounting surface, indoor/outdoor exposure, and distance from the panel.
  • Available panel capacity, breaker space, service limitations, and whether load calculations or upgrades may be needed.
  • Wiring method, conduit or cable path, attic/crawlspace access, trenching, wall repair, and patching exclusions.
  • GFCI/AFCI requirements, disconnect requirements, labeling, inspection expectations, and local AHJ requirements.
  • Permit handling, utility coordination, customer-supplied equipment, and manufacturer installation requirements.

Estimate structure

Estimate sectionWhat to review
LaborSite assessment, material pickup, installation, testing, labeling, cleanup, and inspection support where applicable.
MaterialsBreaker, conductor, conduit, fittings, boxes, fasteners, disconnects, receptacle or charger hardware, and weather-rated components where needed.
AssumptionsAccessible wiring path, available capacity, customer-provided charger status, and expected mounting location.
ExclusionsDrywall repair, trench restoration, service upgrades, utility work, charger configuration, or unknown existing-condition corrections unless included.

Before sending the proposal

Review the estimate against field conditions, local code/AHJ requirements, permit rules, material availability, and any manufacturer instructions. If the installation may require a panel or service upgrade, separate that scope clearly in the estimate.
